Amsterdam a snowy winter wonderland

My favorite city in the Netherlands is Haarlem, a very old city near the beach and near Amsterdam with the spirit of a small town. But Amsterdam will always have a special special place in my heart as well, I lived and studied here for some years... the people, the way of living, the canals, the wonderful musea, pubs, great clubs, superb dining in small restaurants where you'd never expect to get a Michelin star food experience combined with a special kind of cosines. If you're not convinced yet. Take a look for yourself.

The following magical pictures are the work of Pia Jane Bijkerk, an Amsterdam based photographer & Stylist.  I discovered Pia’s work a while back and thought her blog and  images are just absolutely stunning.

So if you're conviced where to stay? What to think of Hotel Seven One Seven?
It is based in a very attractive old canalhouse, with no obvious ‘hotel’ entrance or big declaration: just a brass bell by the Amsterdam-green door. It feels like home. It looks like a home, too, which isn’t too surprising, since it was a private dwelling until the owners moved out and paying guests moved in.

So where to eat? What to think of Lastage?
In the middle of the red light district a former dark cave was converted into a fine, attractive intimate reasonably priced (3 course meal Euro 36,-)  restaurant. Rogier van Dam, ex-star chef of restaurant Posthoorn started this restaurant together with his girlfriend. He is one of the most promising young chefs of Netherlands and she is a talented super enthusiastic, Sommelier. A Red Light District Culinary Dream Team!

In the restaurant, lots of wood and earth tones, robust tables with gray linen runners and beautiful cutlery supplemented with tasteful white and gray crockery.  Real eye-catchers are the two modern chandeliers, which give a timeless touch to the place.

A seat in the front of the restaurant gives you the most contact with the semi-open kitchen, where Rogier works and prevails his passion for the New Dutch cuisine.

I want to be her

Check out this great new blog: I WANT TO BE HER

It is by Andrea Linett, she is the co-founder and former creative director of Lucky Magazine. She stops great looking woman on the streets of New York and asks them the details of their personal style. Then she features an illustration (by Anne Johnston) or photo, along with the girls' personal styling tips (including addresses).

This is what she says about her blog:

"I want to be a different woman every day. Sometimes I see her on the street, sometimes I see her in a magazine, but I always want to try her clothes on even if it’s just for one day.

We will bring you a few women every week – some I’ve spotted just walking around, some I’ve conjured up in my head. Some are illustrated by Anne from my notebook scratchings, and others will be photographed. Then of course we’ll take you to where you can buy everything you need to get the whole look.

We hope you enjoy and get inspired! xxoo Andrea Linett "

Color of the Year for 2011: Honeysuckle

Energizing Honeysuckle Lifts Spirits and Imparts Confidence to Meet Life's Ongoing Challenges

According to leading color guide Pantone, 18-2120 Honeysuckle, a dynamic reddish pink, will be defining the mood of 2011 given its “uplifting” qualities.

In the official report, Pantone Color Institute Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman says:

“In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits.
“Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color, that gets the adrenaline going– perfect to ward off the blues. The hue’s uplifting effect is attributed to the fact that its mother color is red, the most “physical, viscerally alive hue int he spectrum.”

“The intensity of this festive reddish pink allures and engages.
In fact, this color, not the sweet fragrance of the flower blossoms for which it was named, is what attracts hummingbirds to nectar. Honeysuckle may also bring a wave of nostalgia for its associated delicious scent reminiscent of the carefree days of spring and summer.”

Honeysuckle is guaranteed to produce a healthy glow when worn by both men and women.

It's a striking, eye-catching hue that works well for day and night in women's apparel, accessories and cosmetics, and in men's ties, shirts and sportswear.
It elevates our psyche beyond escape, instilling the confidence, courage and spirit to meet the exhaustive challenges that have become part of everyday life.

It is a stark contrast to last year’s color fo the year– cool, serene Turquoise. “While the 2010 color of the year, Pantone 15-5519 Turquoise, served as an escape for many, Honeysuckle emboldens us to face everyday troubles with verve and vigor”. Honeysuckle was not only selected as Pantone’s 2011 Color of the Year, but was also chosen as the defining hue for spring 2011.

Indeed, everyone from the upscale American label Cynthia Steffe to H&M has incorporated the Honeysuckle hue into their spring 2011 ready-to-wear lines.

Orange and Chocolate Mousse

Perfect for those cold cold winter days, to enjoy in front of a fire place.

By: Chocolate Shavings
Serves 4-6 people

5.5 ounces of bittersweet chocolate (70% cocoa)
350 ml of heavy whipping cream
3 large egg whites
2 tbl + 1 tsp of sugar
Zest and juice of 1/2 orange
1 1/2 tsp of Grand Marnier
4 pieces of candied orange, to garnish
4 squares of bittersweet chocolate, to garnish

Chop the chocolate and melt using a double boiler. Once the chocolate is melted, reserve and let cool while you prepare the rest of the mousse.
Place the cream in a bowl making sure the cream is very cold as well as the bowl. You can place both in fridge for 20 minutes. Beat the cream until it becomes light and airy and set aside. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until they just form stiff peaks.
Add the orange juice, zest, and Grand Marnier to the chocolate and fold it into the cream. Once the mixture is homogeneous, gently fold in the egg whites in 2 batches making sure to keep the mixture airy and light. Place the mousse to set in the fridge for 2 hours. Spoon the mousse into ramekins. Grate the chocolate over the mousse to garnish and top with thin strips of candied orange.

Built amphitheatrically, Perivolas’ secluded location combines expansive views with the luxury of absolute tranquillity. Luxe Home Swap

Travelling in style usually means staying in a slick design hotel or boutique bolt-hole that comes with a hefty price tag. Imagine staying in a London loft, Santa Monica beach retreat or riad in Morocco - all for less than a night in a hotel. Luxe Home Swap offers a different spin on the well-established home exchange for vacations concept, focusing on a more boutique home swapping experience.

Location and home-feel are what make the 'luxe' experience, so a 'Luxe' home can be small and stylish as much as large and luxury, as people want different things at different times.

It’s like a dating site for stylish property owners, Luxe Home Swap matches up hotel-averse global travelers. Check out some of their homes…

Ivy League

When reading the online GQ magazine this morning, because I always love Tommy Ton's men's street style captures, my eye was caught by photographer Gordon von Steiner. He turned his lens to the blue-blooded style aces at the head of Princeton's class. Some of my favorites:

Ps. If like me you like the ivy league style for men, also check out one of my previous blogs ... there is a great book about it on my whishlist: Take Ivy, the long-out-of-print Japanese photo book that chronicled manners of dress on America's Ivy League campuses during the mid-'60s (original copies are scarce, and fetch high prices from preppy-style obsessives) has been reprinted in English. The book's 145 photographs capture a sartorial sensibility that is just as prevalent today as it was over 50 years ago.

Or check out the blog Ivy Style. Brought to the Web by two non-Ivy Leaguers—and written with a passion only outsiders can muster—Ivy Style is a newish blog that aims to sate cravings for patrician fashion.
